Cigna Medical IFP Discontinuation: What Providers Should Know
09/07/2026
Cigna Healthcare to Discontinue Medical Individual & Family Plans, Effective January 1, 2027
Cigna Healthcare® has announced it will discontinue offering medical Individual & Family Plans (IFPs), both on and off the Health Insurance Marketplace®, effective January 1, 2027. Customers currently enrolled in these plans will retain coverage through December 31, 2026.
What is and isn't affected:
Participation in other Cigna Healthcare and Evernorth® Behavioral Health networks is not affected by this change, and provider agreements do not need to be amended as a result.
Cigna Healthcare commercial medical plans and dental IFPs are not impacted — this discontinuation applies specifically to medical IFPs.
Claims will continue to be processed in accordance with federal and individual state timely filing requirements, as well as account-specific guidelines, regardless of the coverage end date, as long as the underlying services were rendered while coverage was still in effect.
Behavioral health providers can identify affected patients by their ID cards, which will indicate coverage under a Cigna Connect plan.
Customer communications: Cigna sent notification letters to affected customers on July 1, 2026, informing them that they will need to select new health coverage for the 2027 plan year.
Why this matters for providers/credentialing teams:
Because this change eliminates an entire plan category rather than changing provider network participation, providers won't need to take credentialing action for their own status with Cigna. However, practices should expect patient questions as IFP-enrolled patients select new coverage for 2027. Front-office and patient-facing staff should be briefed ahead of open enrollment so they can accurately answer questions about the practice's current network participation with other plans. Behavioral health providers should also watch for Cigna Connect ID cards and verify coverage before services are rendered.
