Carelon Is Expanding What Group Practices Enter Through Availity

What changed

Carelon Behavioral Health is continuing to use Availity Essentials as its provider “Digital Front Door” for network-related functions, including enrollment.

Its second-quarter 2026 provider newsletter announced enhancements specifically for group practices submitting new provider applications in Availity. The updated application includes additional fields intended to support more complete provider information.

Those fields include:

  • office hours, including daily schedules and after-hours availability;
  • holiday appointment-scheduling availability;
  • age limitations;
  • population treated, including age categories and percentage of the practice;
  • gender identity treated;
  • racial and cultural populations served;
  • non-English languages spoken by office staff;
  • translation-service availability; and
  • interpreter experience and availability.

Carelon also introduced a provider-status field showing whether the provider's setup is Complete or Pending. Carelon defines “Complete” as meaning that the provider has been fully credentialed and has a fully executed provider agreement. “Pending” means that some required setup steps are still in progress.

Why it matters for your practice

The significance of this update is not simply that the application has more fields. The information Carelon is requesting covers how the practice actually operates: when appointments are available, which populations the provider treats, what languages are available and what accessibility-related services the practice can provide.

For group practices, this means the person completing the enrollment application may need information that is not traditionally kept in a credentialing file. The new status field is also important because it creates a clearer distinction between an application that has been submitted and a provider who is actually ready within the payer's system. Carelon's definition is specific: Complete means fully credentialed and supported by a fully executed provider agreement.

What to do — and what not to do

  • Before submitting a Carelon group-provider application, collect the operational information required in the Availity workflow.
  • After submission, monitor the provider's status rather than treating the application itself as evidence that the enrollment process is complete.
  • If the status remains Pending, determine which required setup step is still outstanding.
  • Do not describe a provider as fully participating merely because the application has been submitted.

Carelon's expanded Availity application makes operational practice information part of the group-provider enrollment record — and its new status field distinguishes submission from completed participation.
