Aetna Is Putting Provider-Data Verification Back on the Credentialing Calendar
10/05/2026
What changed
Aetna's September 2026 OfficeLink Updates contains a direct reminder for providers to keep their profile information current.
Aetna says accurate provider information helps members find providers, facilitates care and receipt of essential updates, and could help providers meet federal, state or contractual verification requirements. Aetna also states that providers who do not verify their information could be at risk of being removed from the provider directory. For providers with an Availity account, Aetna directs them to the Provider Data Management (PDM) tool to make essential updates. Aetna also provides options for providers who cannot use Availity.
There is a separate credentialing reminder for practices trying to become credentialed with Aetna: make sure Aetna has the current credentialing department email address and reach out to the Aetna representative if it needs to be updated.
Aetna also tells Medicare providers to review and update information in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to support accurate provider display across Medicare systems, including Medicare Plan Finder and future initiatives such as the National Provider Directory.
Why it matters for your practice
Aetna's language is notable because it connects provider-data verification directly with directory participation. Maintaining an accurate profile is not presented simply as a convenience for patients. Aetna identifies current information as relevant to federal, state and contractual verification requirements and explicitly warns that failure to verify information could put a provider at risk of directory removal. The credentialing-contact reminder is equally practical. A practice can have an otherwise complete application but still miss payer communication if the credentialing department's contact information is outdated.
For Medicare providers, Aetna's separate NPPES reminder reinforces the importance of keeping provider information current in the systems used for Medicare-related provider display.
What to do — and what not to do
- Review Aetna provider information through the appropriate update channel and confirm that the information currently on file is accurate.
- Verify the credentialing department's email address with Aetna, particularly if staff, responsibilities or contact information have changed.
- Medicare providers should also review the relevant NPPES information.
- Do not wait for the next recredentialing cycle to discover that the payer has an outdated contact or provider record.
Aetna's September reminder makes provider-data verification an ongoing credentialing responsibility. An active contract does not make an outdated provider record harmless.
